Investment Appraisal

Investment appraisal

What is this?

Weighing up different options in detail, by quantifying the costs and benefits, understanding the areas of uncertainty and risk, and calculating the economic return on investment.

The approach varies depending on the sector.

  • For example, in a private sector project finance model, the focus is on financing: optimising debt to maximise returns for equity shareholders.  A fully-integrated three-statement model is essential.
  • In contrast, in the public sector, the focus is on quantifying wider benefits for all key stakeholders, including non-financial benefits.  A three-statement model may not be needed but the benefits mapping and modelling is often much more complex.

The result?

The best delivery option or business plan is chosen, because a broad range of factors relevant to the stakeholders are quantified and used in decision-making.

Recent track record:

  • At a major energy company, I led the financial modelling and investment appraisal for a high profile multi £’000m programme to implement a new global learning and management system.  My work was highly commended during the financial scrutiny process.

  • At a fibre infrastructure  business, I supported project teams in getting their Business Cases approved, by quantifying the costs and benefits of their initiatives, ensuring that key assumptions were aligned with the business plan.

  • At an NHS  Foundation Trust, I led the economic modelling for the outline Business Case for an estates reconfiguration - including an adapted three-statement modelling approach.  At another NHS trust, I led the benefits modelling for a strategic business case for a service reconfiguration.
